National Buffalo Foundation
Preserve their History. Foster their Future.
Healthy bison herds and a healthy bison business require research and outreach to equip producers and marketers with the resources needed to manage their animals, their land, and enterprises.
The National Buffalo Foundation’s mission, to be the major trusted source for bison research and education, supports that research and outreach. The NBF is the primary fundraising arm supporting the Center of Excellence for Bison Studies, which conducts and distributes cutting-edge research to expand the tools available to build healthy herds and businesses. Over the past four years, the NBF has provided nearly $1.5 million in financial support for the Center of Excellence.
NBF’s efforts extend beyond the Center of Excellence to include projects such as the Bison Exhibit, a traveling interactive exhibit exploring the past, present, and future of this magnificent animal; the National Mammal of the United States.
The NBF is a 501(c)(3) foundation, so contributions are deductible as a charitable donation. Click here to learn how you can financially support the NBF’s important work.

Intertribal Buffalo Council
The Intertribal Buffalo Council is dedicated to the support of sustainable Tribal buffalo programs and provides the membership with technical assistance in the development of such programs on both a localized and a national scale. This includes training and technical assistance on the development of feasibility analyses, business plans and marketing plans. ITBC assists Tribes in the development of a consistent supply chain, uniform labeling, packaging and product distribution. ITBC is committed to reestablishing buffalo herds on Tribal lands in a manner that promotes cultural enhancement, spiritual revitalization, ecological restoration, and economic development.

Center of Excellence For Bison Studies
The Center of Excellence for Bison Studies (COE) is coordinated through South Dakota State University, but includes active participation by researchers and Extension officials from other land grant universities, including 1994 tribal land-grant colleges and universities. The COE is a collaborative partnership among SDSU, the National Bison Association and the National Buffalo Foundation.
The COE focuses on research activities that aim to improve the understanding, management, and health of bison and the economic viability of all bison producers and managers. The COE is headquartered at the SDSU West River Research and Extension center in Rapid City, South Dakota.

I joined the NBA to primarily educate myself about bison but I quickly learned I now had a ready resource of experienced bison ranchers willing to help an novice rancher achieve my goals.
